Welcome to My Ignorant Wife - NFL Edition

Writer: George PatersonGeorge Paterson

Brains and brawn. Strategy and emotion. Violence and skill. The NFL is a dichotomy. With brief bursts of intensity mixed in with the tense pauses between plays, football is the yin and yang of sports. The duality between the incredible athleticism and the laser-focused execution is fascinating. But beyond the strategy, beyond the world-class presentation and brand that the NFL has become, is a simple truth. We love the violence and competition shown on the gridiron, and with that love comes emotion. The true reason why the NFL has grown itself into the premiere sport in North America.

Hi, I’m George, and I am a Canadian transplant in Australia that is mad about the NFL. My goal is to share my passion for football and try and promote a global audience for this amazing sport. I also want to be able to educate the ignorant, starting with my gorgeous

wife Camilla. This blog will collect my thoughts on the NFL season and catalogue my attempts to share my love for football with my wife, and you as well. My hope is that my content will be for those that are bolted-on NFL diehards and people new to the sport.

My love for the NFL stems from a book I received for Christmas way back in 2001. The 2001 Official NFL Record and Factbook had every game recap, box score, stat and stories on the NFL champion Baltimore Ravens.

My experience with football to this point had been fleeting, with my parents throwing Super Bowl parties, and occasionally watching on random Sundays with my dad. I began playing football in 2000 (with mediocrity), and this is where my interest was piqued. Now that I began to understand the game, I started to respect certain aspects over others. The Xs and Os and the violence of the game were particularly interesting to me, as my lack of athleticism lent my own playing style to studying the game and finding that ‘edge” on the field. Then, this tome was waiting for me in my stocking. On the cover, number 52, Ray Lewis, exemplified everything I loved about football. Tough, smart, violent, and intense. I wanted to model my game after him. I also memorised everything about the 2001 season, and one of the most unique Super Bowl champion teams of all-time – the Baltimore Ravens. Led by Lewis, and a fearsome defence, the Ravens encapsulated “old-school” football. From that point on, I knew that football was going to be one of my great passions.
